For Once!

Just wanted to type out some things that have happened/been on my mind lately.
My Age.
Beside the fact that I'm turning 20 soon, I usually ignore my age. Especially because I know I look a LOT younger than my age. I don't mind being thought of as 15 or 16 because it's COMMON for people to think that's how old I am. HOWEVER, yesterday night hit an ALL time low. I was with my dad, waiting for him to punch out when we see his co-worker and they get into a discussion. Of course, introductions are made. "Oh, this is my daughter. Youngest daughter." Blahblahblah and whatnot. Fine, normal. Co-worker man asks if my dad had a son (because I had pointed out after my father had stopped at "youngest" that I was the youngest DAUGHTER, because we can't get THAT wrong) and how old said son was. My dad answers this in a kinda round-about way and says that, oh, there are EIGHT years between me and my little brother. The conversation trails off from there and relates to why it took so long for my little brother to come about, which, hell, I don't want to hear about. But THEN. When the conversation goes a little quiet, co-worker man asks if my brother is FIVE. My dad corrects him and say that he's 11. A few minutes later, I try to figure out in my head why he thought my brother was five and I figured it out. He thought I was THIRTEEN.

......OMG. WTF?! I know I look bloody young, but 13? SERIOUSLY. It just freaked me out when I was sitting down and THINKING about it. Gah. Yeah, that made me feel insecure. But really, how illogical was THAT?! Why would a 13 year old be going to school in the city if she lives upstate. By that age, I'd still basically be in ELEMENTARY school. And, even if that DID make sense, why would my parents be okay with me being up at MIDNIGHT (which is when my dad gets off work)? Seriously. When I was 13, the latest they'd let me stay up was like 9... MAYBE 10. ~_~;; It just threw me for a loop and basically for the ENTIRE 30 - 45 minute ride home, that was all I thought about. Which leads me to my next thought.

My Hair.
The thing is I know that if I cut my hair shorter, I'll look older. By a LITTLE at least. (Well, that's what I've heard and what people have told me.) So of course, it's no surprise that I want to cut it again. But my GOD, my hair grows back so fast so usually I see it as pointless and that I'll just go back to young looking Desiree with the long hair. ~_~;; Yes, this is pointless. But I don't know. Should I cut my hair? I want to, but at the same time I could care less. XP (Like the rest of you. LOL.)


My Writing.
I have been literally BRAIN dead when it comes to my writing. I have a TON of projects I want to finish already and this doesn't even include actual fiction or fanfiction. Just writing things that'll end up being long. And it just hasn't worked. Like my brain hasn't been able to tap into that part of it in a LONG while. And related to fiction, I NEED to be able to write. For one thing, I want to write something original for my Books for Young Readers class, so that I won't end up having to write a freaking, boring paper. It's my FAVORITE class, so I want to put SOME effort into it. Right? Plus, I've been working on my original story for OVER a year now and have hit some sort of haitus again. XP I haven't updated for the past 2 months? o.O Which is bad because people were actually READING it on fictionpress. So I WANT to write... Really. I DO. But when I stare at the page before me and my hands type away. I always just backspace because I don't LIKE what I'm writing at all. T.T Ugh.

Which kinda connects to fanfiction. I have TWO stories that I've been planning on finishing and they're both so DRASTICALLY different from one another. One of them has been on my laptop for MONTHS and I can only pick it up every now and then to continue it. And last night, I wrote one section of it and pretty much want to trash it all now, because I felt like I was not only just filling space, but that I repeated myself too much and for that ONE section? I wanted it to have more of an impact. Gah. I'm rambling about something NOBODY else knows about/cares about? *sighs* And the other one is a newer one in which I feel like my characters are just OFF. Completely 100% off and I hate it when I don't have characterization down, because I'll end up CHUCKING the entire project. And considering the thought I put into it, I so don't wanna do it. ~_~;; It's reasons like those that I feel like I'll never be a good writer. *sighs*

My Fandoms.
Ugh. I think I've figured out why all my other fandoms other than JE have faded to the background. It's because I haven't watched anything related to them that could keep me interested. ~_~;; Seriously, I can't remember the last time I watched my television shows and that just depresses me because I MISS watching those shows. I do love my school schedule, but to be missing as many television shows as I am? I'm growing to dislike it more and more. And at this rate, this summer's going to be LET'S CATCH UP WITH ALL MY TELEVISION SHOWS. Which kinda speaks about how pathetic I am to be spending all of summer, indoors, watching television/on my laptop. ~_~;;

My School.
Then, there's SCHOOL. I have a test today in Calculus that I'm just basically dreading to no end. If I hadn't gotten a ZERO on the last quiz (which I STILL don't understand how I got because I was CONFIDENT during that quiz), I wouldn't be as nervous about it as I am now. But no, that freaking score threw me off to no end. And now, all I can think about is failing Calculus. AGAIN. One failure was ENOUGH, thank you very much. The thought of failing the same class related to my MAJOR is enough to make me just want to shoot myself.

And then there's a FRENCH test this friday that I'm totally just not prepared for. We went over homework in class yesterday and all I could do was stare as I got answer after answer just plain WRONG when we went over it. And now I'm dreading THIS test as well. Not to mention, my last test wasn't the greatest score ever. (I did pass, but still. I'm picky like that.) So yeah. I don't want to take this test. ...I just want to drop french altogether, but it's just not possible. Not with my schedule. *sighs again*

...Today was a depressing post. Stupid real life.

look at it at the positive side... when you're 50..you'll look like 30 or something.. i wish i looked like 13..xD
i'm now 17 and almost turning 18..and most people think i'm 20 or something..noo i don't like that xD.. that means i look old
and if you really want to look like your age and cutting your hair is working..i'd do it.. i mean, why not? eventhough i think long hair is more beautiful than short.. but everybody has different tastes :)

I can definitely relate to you on both the age/hair thing & and writing thing. I think I finally look my age, but there were so many times when ppl thought I was so much younger than I was, & part of that was that I had really long hair. My junior year of college I finally cut it, & now I think I finally look like I'm 23.

And the writing thing... I have such a hard time writing sometimes. I started another NCIS fic the other night & it was just taking hours & all I have is like a page & a half. Writing is frustrating at times, but you have to keep plugging away. Good writing doesn't come out of nowhere. It takes a LOT of time & effort. I've been working for so many years & it's only recently, like this past summer, that I've thought it's been really good. So yeah, it's definitely a process. And it's not easy, but if you really love it, go for it.

As for age--I also look younger than my age, but everyone says, why does it bug you? It's a GOOD thing, when you're 40 you'll look 30, blah blah blah. SO I thought about it more analytically and realized it bothered me for 2 reasons:

- I felt like people weren't really seeing me, that they weren't paying attention to me, and that really annoyed me (because even though I look young, there's lots of clues that I'm older). So I felt as though people who got my age wrong were being stupid and thoughtless.

- I felt as though people who told me I seemed young meant that I was acting irresponsibly and immaturely, or like a big baby, and I hated that. Because I really am a grownup.

But, truthfully, I do have a young spirit and I probably always will. I like to play and have fun and even though I've gotten older and become an adult in lots of ways (college degree, marriage, etc.) I'm still kid-like in that way. So I try to think of my playful spirit as a positive, that I will never been old and cynical and boring and I will always have fun!

But it still annoys me if people ask me if I'm 16.

I kind of have it opposite with the age thing. Although I do look 18, I just feel really old. I have all these younger cousins-- and by that I mean they range from ONE to SIX years old. And every time I'm around them, I just feel the age gap, and it makes me feel like life is coming to an end soon; I'm about to expire, or some other weird crap like that, idek what I'm saying anymore. -_-

JE fandom is good enough by itself, isn't it? There is always something droolworthy to fangirl, LOL. XD

OMG. ditto to everything you just said. I'm 19 and got mistaken for a junior high schooler by my haidresser. when I was 18 the receptionist at my dentist's office thought I was 12. and when I cut all my hair off last summer, it just gave my sisters cause to call my a little boy rather than a little girl. but I still like to think it's aged me a bit.

anyway, good luck on your tests! I haven't taken math in years (despite economics being one of my majors), but calculus was the source of much angst for me in high school. that was the only class that ever made me cry when I got a test back. people for whom calculus is easy are anomalies, total mutants. well, good luck again and I hope you feel better!

LOL. Poor you! I think you have it worse than me. Then again, my brother's EIGHT years younger than me and for him to be thought of as older than me would be not only creepy, but kinda pathetic. But that's only for now, before he hits PUBERTY. Who knows what'll happen then. Right?

LOL. I get that comment all the time, but who knows how I'll grow up. But for now, I'd really prefer to look my age or at least NEAR it. Not 7 years younger. LOL.

At that age, I would actually LIKE looking older because it was always embarassing to me when they question my age in FRONT of me. Hehe.
As for my hair. I like it long but it's a hassle. I like it short but I miss it long during that time. LOL. I'm so "complex." I'll probably decide when it's my b-day because I want to think of what I'll do for that day. That's when I usually decide. Hehe.
Oh and as for make-up? I HATE make-up. I don't like putting stuff on my face so... I tend to avoid make-up. *shrugs* I guess because the FEW times that I wear it, it always bothers me. That'll probably change in the future. But for now. I'd rather not. (I'm a weird girl like that. Heh.)

Heheh. The age thing does bother me, and always has. I know what you mean about many people thinking that. And hair so has an effect, which is weird. Who know that hair could be such an influence to how old one looks. *shrugs* That's good though, to finally feel/look like you're your own age. LOL. (That sentence made little sense, but whatever. XP)

Yeah... I know what you mean. It's like the empty document (somewhat empty) taunts you kinda. LIke you KNOW you could write more, but you just can't actually form the thoughts and put it onto paper. I always feel like that. Especially lately. XP And yeah, it really DOES take a lot of effort. If it was easy, everyone in the world with an OUNCE of brain would be writing (although it feels like everyone IS writing in this day and age.) But yeah, I was just frustrated when I wrote this entry and wanted to rant. LOL. It's just hard sometimes, but that's part of writing, right? ^_^

It's always bothered me, too, & it could be part of the reason I've always been so much more mature for my age. I've always acted a lot older than I am, & ppl thinking I'm younger than I am - once, I was at a friend's high school graduation party, & this was 2 years after I had graduated high school, & his grandma asked me when I was graduating. I was like, "Uh, I graduated 2 years ago..." And it could've just been that she was losing her memory or something, too, b/c Justin & I had been friends for YEARS & she knew me. Who knows.

Yep, that's how I feel. If I'm writing fic that's mostly dialogue, that usually just flows so easily, but the one I'm working on now has description, & I'm feeling like the dialogue is off & yeah, it's just not cool. I hate that. And it really does feel like everyone's writing, and honestly, most ppl who are writing don't have the talent for it. Either their ideas are stale or they don't have the technical sense for it. But that's just me being a writing snob again. :p I like to think I'm original & a good writer, but I'm sure other ppl disagree w/ that. Whatever. It's a big market. There's room for everyone.

Yeah, I get that reaction too. "Why do you not like looking younger?" Because it's IRRITATING. I already hate to have to point out my age in the first place. So why would I like having to correct people in the first place. XP

I don't know. It's such a different reaction. But I'd like to LOOK my age... It makes me feel like I have to act so much more mature to compensate for the age "difference." ...Does that make sense at all? XP Whatever. But yeah, I can see why you'd feel old. In my family I'm basically in the middle. I have a TON of cousins that are old, and a TON of cousins that are young. So I guess that it's balanced? o.O But LOL, um... That's a sad feeling though. To feel young around all your cousins. Must be a little depressing, I'd think. Hehe.

And LOL. Yeah, JE Fandom is GREAT. It really is. I agree. But sometimes, I feel like I have a one track mind. LOL. Plus, I have so many other loves that I wish I was caught up on. Hehe.

OOoh. BONES is back? Ooooh. Wish I could watch. Although I haven't seen the last few episodes though. XP So I don't think I could watch in the long run. ~_~;; But yeah, I used to be okay with American Idol until last year when Taylor Hicks won when I thought he REALLY SUCKED. So I kinda stopped watching. XP

And thanks! I think I did fairly well in Calculus so not a LOT to worry about there. XP But yeah. I usually ENJOY math. Or more like, I'm good at it. But Calculus has pretty much turned my world around and whatnot. But for once, I have a good teacher, so it's not as bad. XP LOL And thanks again! I appreciate it. ^_^

Hmm... I like to THINK that I act above my age to compensate as well. But I don't know if that's really true. I get that reaction too though. And I think that's probably only because people honestly just don't remember details like that. I could be wrong. But that's what I'd LIKE to think. LOL. And LOL. That's so unfortunate. Maybe she WAS losing her memory? I mean my grandmother keeps thinking I'm starting college even though I'm in my second year and whatnot.

Ooooh. Yeah. I have a problem with description. I think that TOO much description is dull and boring. But if there's too little, then it won't flow as well. So trying to find the balance between dialogue and description gets a little difficult and mind-boggling. Plus when you re-read it, since you've put so much thought into it, you get a little biased and think that it'll be fine but like 2 weeks later, be hitting yourself over the head and thinking up better things. ...Or is that just me? LOL. And yeah, I think that some people just write because ZOMG, IT'S COOL TO GET PEOPLE'S COMPLIMENTS. AND ZOMG, I THINK THIS IS UBER COOL AND OTHER PEOPLE WILL SOOOO LIKE IT. I hate people who think that way. Because usually, they just write and not look over their work and have typos and grammatical errors (not that I don't have my share of those too, but I usually GO OVER my work and all my scenes basically have MEANING.) ...But yeah, that might be me being a writing snob as well. LOL. (And I'm not even that great a writer. Nor am I a picky reader. So who knows.) I think you're a great writer, and really, it's to each their own, right?

Yeah, I think most ppl really are only concerned w/ themselves & don't pay attention to little things like how old ppl are. It's probably not something we should really take offense to.

I feel the same way. You definitely need a balance. And that's hard to achieve sometimes. I mean, if you're intentionally writing something that's supposed to fit into a certain genre (say you want the characters to not be revealed until later or it's a drabble or you're writing porn :p), then it's okay to have one or the other as the dominating thing, but generally, it doesn't work too well. And I know! I frickin' hate ff.net half the time simply for that fact. It's all these teenybopper fangirls who have no idea what it means to be an adult, & therefore shouldn't be writing fic for adult characters! I just seriously get annoyed w/ ppl who don't care a/b writing on that site. It's like, don't do it & subject all of us to your horrible writing skills. :p I'm generally a semi-picky reader, but when it comes to fic, I read just a/b everything there is. I will stop & not read a fic if I see massive spelling/grammar errors or I start reading and say, WHOA, that is not in character. And thank you. :)

Yeah, well, I basically meant that the market is wide, & there's room for everyone's personal writing style. And I like a ton of different styles & WRITE in a lot of different styles myself, so it's all good. :)

Heh. I wouldn't take it THAT far, but yeah. For some people that don't interact with you often, it isn't really a thing they'd focus on. Unfortunately enough. XP But what can you do, there's a ton of self-centered people out there. (Not that I can speak because I think I can be VERY self-centered. Seriously. And it's totally something I try hard to change. XP)

Balance is definitely hard to achieve. And sometimes when you THINK you've got it... It really doesn't always work out that way. XP Oh and I totally agree with your examples. Especially in porn fics/smut. Because those are just mainly description and if you don't know what you're writing or it comes out weird, the fact that it IS mainly description really comes out and doesn't work well. So yeah, I totally understand. Heh. As for ff.net. Ugh. I usually have to keep a mind out and it's really summaries that lure me in. If the summary looks at LEAST a little thought out and whatnot, I'll glance at the story but nowadays, I tend to stick with authors that I've already considered my favorites. And then I branch out by looking at THEIR favorites and seeing of said favorites are good. LOL. But yeah. I just CONSIDER myself to be picky. Who knows if that's actually true. Hehe. And yes! Characterization is such a big thing with me. Sometimes, if there are a bit of grammar/spelling mistakes but the fic is like 100% in character, I will ignore all the other faults. Because that is REALLY what gets me. I like it if it feels like the situation the people have put people in are fitting to how said characters would react. And you're very welcome. ^_^

Yeah, that's true. Hehe. I like different styles for sure. If you'd ask me what my favorite genre would be, I couldn't answer very well because I like all types of genres. (Although I do steer clear of sci-fi and non-fiction.) But yeah, in that case, it is a pretty wide market. ^_^

It's so true. I can be very self-centered myself. I try not to be, but it's hard sometimes.

Oh, God, tell me about it. I've gotten slammed for sex scenes that weren't completely right, so yeah, been there. I know - I sometimes try to judge stuff by what has the most reviews, but it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes really shitty stuff gets a ton of reviews while genuinely good stuff goes unreviewed. And I never get a whole lot of feedback there, & I think it's b/c I don't write the really popular pairings. Silly. But yes, characterization. I think the NCIS fic writers at ff.net are generally pretty good a/b characterization, but I remember lots of forays into the X-Files fandom (which is freaking HUGE) where the characterization has not been so great.

Oh, I know it. I literally have read any genre there is, I'm sure. I used to not be a huge fan of non-fiction, but then I ended up having to take a non-fiction seminar as my writing workshop for my minor & while I hated the class for the most part (lol, it was a 3 hour lecture, basically - boring), I learned SO much a/b non-fiction writing, & I got an A on my final article, & the professor didn't have anything bad to say a/b it other than I should end on a scene rather than a summary. I was so happy. Hee.

Re the age issue, I am older than you, in my mid-20s (almost late 20s, depending on how you see it) and people often think I'm much younger. Recently someone younger than me guessed my age to be 17, which I find worse than someone older thinking I'm young......... But actually, now that I really am fairly old, I quite like being mistaken as a teenager. So I know you've probably heard this a thousand billion times, but it will get better and you might grow to like it one day ^^

Of course, if you take the fact that you're often thought of as younger than you are as some sort of sign that people aren't taking you seriously, or indication that they will undermine you, then you probably will always resent looking younger than you are. For me, that's not a problem because I am quite assertive and have learnt to stand my ground.
